Vice President Kashim Shettima has declared an immediate federal government intervention following a tragic tanker explosion in Jigawa State that resulted in the loss of over 100 lives.

He also called for a thorough reassessment of fuel transportation safety protocols throughout Nigeria.

In a statement released by his media aide, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima, speaking on behalf of President Bola Tinubu, expressed deep sorrow for the families affected by this heartbreaking incident and prayed that Almighty Allah grants them the strength to cope with their loss.

“My heart aches for those who have had their families torn apart by this disaster,” Shettima conveyed in his condolence message. “This devastating incident has shaken us all to our core. The Federal Government stands with the people of Jigawa. We are mobilizing all necessary resources to support the injured and assist the families impacted by this calamity.”

The explosion, which occurred in Majiya, has plunged the nation into mourning. In response, the Vice President has ordered the swift deployment of personnel and resources from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to Jigawa State.

“As we grapple with this tragedy, let us also reflect on the importance of safety measures and public awareness to prevent such incidents in the future,” Shettima emphasized. “Every life is precious, and we must do all we can to protect our citizens.”

He also commended first responders and medical personnel for their relentless efforts, stating that their dedication “exemplifies the best of our nation’s spirit.”

Last Friday, Shettima inaugurated the National Road Safety Advisory Council (NaRSAC), charging its members to adhere to global best practices aimed at reducing traffic accidents. He tasked the council with establishing National Road Safety Strategy targets and ensuring effective coordination among federal, state, and local governments to achieve common road safety goals.

“Road safety is not merely a matter of policy but a critical part of the lifeline that connects the people of this nation,” he asserted.

In a related development, Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, extended her condolences to Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi and the citizens affected by this unfortunate incident.

In a heartfelt message she personally signed, she stated, “This tragic incident, which left many dead, several injured, and caused significant property loss, is most unfortunate. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. I pray God grants the friends, families, and loved ones of the departed souls the fortitude to bear the painful loss and grants a speedy recovery to the injured. May Almighty Allah grant Aljanah Fridaus to the departed and comfort all those affected by this tragedy.”
