In Ilorin, Kwara State, an Area Court at Centre-Igboro, on Wednesday, gave a one-week window for both parties in a divorce suit to explore possible reconciliation.

The husband, Oloruntoyin Yahaya, initiated the divorce proceedings, accusing his wife, Alimat Yahaya, of engaging in harmful traditional practices. He alleged that she was involved in the use of charms that could potentially cause his demise.

“I no longer have any interest in her because I don’t trust her anymore,” Mr. Yahaya told the court, expressing his fear and desire for a divorce. According to him, his wife frequently visited various places to obtain “wicked traditional medicine” capable of controlling and harming him.

However, the wife, Ms. Alimat, denied the allegations. She firmly stated that she had never sought or brought any charm into their matrimonial home. She also reiterated her commitment to the marriage, revealing that she had made several attempts to reconcile with her husband, including enlisting the help of her family members to plead on her behalf.

In his ruling, the Presiding Judge, Hammad Ajumonbi, affirmed that under the law, a husband has the right to request a divorce at any time, without necessarily providing a reason. However, he emphasized that the court could allow time for efforts toward a resolution.

“If the wife is really interested in the marriage, she needs to be of good conduct, loyal to her husband, and know how to persuade him,” Judge Ajumonbi advised.

The court granted Ms. Alimat one week to address the situation and improve her relationship with her husband. The case was adjourned until October 23, when a report on the outcome of the settlement efforts is expected.
