IGP Suspends e-CMR Enforcement, Prioritizes Public Awareness on Stolen Vehicles

Abuja – The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba, has ordered the immediate suspension of the enforcement of the electronic Certificate of Merit (e-CMR) regime, citing the need to prioritize public awareness and education on the issue of stolen vehicles.

The IGP’s directive comes amid growing concerns about the proliferation of stolen vehicles in the country, and the need for a more effective approach to tackling the problem.

According to a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Muyiwa Adejobi, the suspension of e-CMR enforcement is aimed at allowing for a comprehensive review of the policy, and to ensure that members of the public are adequately sensitized on the importance of verifying the authenticity of vehicle documents before making purchases.

The police boss has also ordered all commands and formations to intensify public awareness campaigns, and to work closely with relevant stakeholders, including vehicle dealers and market associations, to prevent the sale and purchase of stolen vehicles.

The suspension takes effect immediately, and will remain in place until further notice.
