In commemoration of Hijrah 1445, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has declared Wednesday, July 19, 2023, as a public holiday in the state.
Wednesday, the first day of Muharram 1445 AH, is the beginning of Islamic New Year.
The announcement was made in a circular signed by the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Otunba Segun Ogunwuyi.
While congratulating the Muslim faithfuls on the commencement of the New Year, the governor also enjoined them to use the occasion to pray for the peace, unity and sustainability of the state in particular and the country in general.
The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has declared Wednesday, July 19, 2023, as the first day of MUHARRAM 1445H, which is equivalent to the 29th of Dhul hijja, 1444 AH.
The Sultanate Council of Sokoto announced the declaration in a statement on Tuesday.
“Due to the lack of positive sighting report of crescent in Nigeria, Wednesday 19th July 2023 has been declared the first day of MUHARRAM 1445H,” the statement read.
Recall that the Sultan had asked Muslims in the country to look out for the new moon of Muharram 1445 AH on Monday, July 17 and report to the nearest district or village head for onward communication to him.
