Guaranty Trust Bank Plc has confirmed a recent attempt to breach its website domain.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday shortly after the bank renewed its domain name, caused a brief disruption to online services and left customers temporarily unable to access their accounts.

This led to widespread concern and media speculation about potential cloning of the bank’s website and risks to customer data.

In a statement released on Thursday, the bank clarified that the hacking attempt was unsuccessful and assured that the website had not been cloned.

The bank also emphasized that customer data was not compromised, as it does not store personal information on its website.

The statement, titled “Alleged Web Domain Hack: GTBank Provides Clarity,” addressed the media reports, stating: “While there was an isolated attempt to compromise our website domain, we want to assure all our customers and stakeholders that our website has not been cloned. Additionally, as we do not store customer data on our website, there has been no compromise of customer information.”

The bank’s Information Security team is working diligently to restore domain settings, and GTBank reassured customers of its commitment to data security. The statement continued: “Our Information Security Experts are working around the clock to resolve the issue, and we anticipate that our website will be fully operational soon. We urge customers to disregard recent media claims and maintain confidence in our security measures. Thank you for your continued support.”

Our correspondent has verified that the website is now back in service.
