Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has reassured workers in the state of his administration’s commitment to implementing the new minimum wage once approved by the Federal Government.
Addressing workers during the 2024 May Day celebration in Ado-Ekiti, the governor pledged to sustain the existing N15,000 wage award to cushion the effect of inflation pending the finalization of discussions at the federal level.
Oyebanji highlighted his administration’s support for workers, including the recent employment of 20,000 jobseekers, conditional cash grants, and other palliatives.
He also mentioned the increase in wages and consequential adjustments for workers on Grade 13 and above, as well as the payment of deductions to cooperatives.
The governor empathized with workers over the current fuel scarcity, assuring that the government is working to increase PMS supply to the state.
He appealed to petrol marketers to stop hoarding and indiscriminate price hikes, considering the general populace’s interest.
Labour leaders commended the governor for his pro-worker policies, including increased subventions to tertiary institutions, wage awards for pensions, and timely salary payments.
They also requested the recapitalization of the housing and car loan for workers, which has not been done in 20 years, with the current maximum amount being N750,000.
