Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has announced plans to create smart cities across the state through regeneration schemes, emphasizing the need for climate change resilience and urban afforestation.
Speaking at the 2024 World Environment Day, the Governor represented by his deputy, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, highlighted initiatives to enhance green spaces, promote sustainable transportation, and reduce carbon emissions. Over 100 hectares of land in Abeokuta, Ijebu-Ode, Ota, and other locations have been restructured to become environmentally friendly through public-private partnerships.
The Governor stressed the importance of collective efforts to ensure a safe environment and appreciated the Presidential Committee on Climate Action and the Green Economic Solutions for their efforts towards achieving Carbon Neutrality in Nigeria by 2060.
While speaking, Ogun State Commissioners for Forestry and Physical Planning, Engr. Oludotun Taiwo and TPL Tunji Odunlami, commended the Governor’s efforts, emphasizing the need for collaboration to achieve a smart city agenda.
On his part, the Director-General, Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria, Dr. Zachariah Buba Yaduma, highlighted the importance of urban forestry, park management, and green infrastructure in achieving a smart city agenda.
Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Ola Oresanya, however expressed the state’s determination to create a new line of economy through green financing mechanisms, while global safety expert, Mrs. Dominga Odebunmi, commended the state government’s efforts and urged residents to embrace safety culture and become environmentally conscious.
