Governor Abiodun Advocates for Stronger Cooperative Policies in Ogun

• Celebrates International Day of Cooperatives with Focus on Growth

The Ogun State Government is committed to enhancing the cooperative movement as a means to invigorate the state’s micro-economy through effective policy frameworks, capacity building, and financial incentives.

Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun made this declaration at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta during the opening of the 2024 International Day of Cooperatives Conference.

This event was organized by the Ogun State Cooperative Federation Limited (OGSCOFED) in collaboration with the Ogun State Ministry of Community Development and Cooperatives, under the theme, “Cooperative Build a Better Future for All.”

Represented by his Deputy, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, Governor Abiodun emphasized the significant role of cooperatives in socio-economic development, praising them for being people-centered enterprises characterized by democratic structures that empower individuals to fulfill their economic goals.

He noted that his administration has settled all outstanding cooperative deductions owed to various organizations, stating that these deductions are now paid simultaneously with salaries.

The governor highlighted the need for essential financing institutions to support cooperative societies in the state, enabling them to access funding at lower interest rates.

Commissioner for Community Development and Cooperatives, Hon. Ademola Balogun, also addressed attendees, revealing that the state boasts over 14,000 registered cooperative societies, which have effectively bridged the wealth creation and distribution gap among members and stakeholders, ultimately improving the well-being of the populace.

Earlier, Alhaji Wasiu Olaleye, President of OGSCOFED, explained that the conference was organized to allow stakeholders to discuss best practices in the industry, aiming to drive sustainable change within cooperatives.

He also commended Governor Abiodun for his support in enhancing the cooperative landscape.

In his goodwill message, Mr. Dele Oye, President of the National Association of Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA), represented by Director General Mr. Sola Obadimu, underscored the vital roles of cooperative societies in nation-building, expressing the association’s interest in advancing cooperative initiatives.

The opening ceremony featured several highlights, including the decoration of Governor Abiodun as the Grand Patron of Ogun State Cooperatives Movement, among other accolades.
