Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has called for the establishment of a military Forward Operation Base in the eastern part of the state to bolster security and address rising criminal activities.

Governor Abiodun made this appeal on Wednesday during a courtesy visit from Major General Farooq Mijinyawa, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 81 Division, Nigerian Army, at his office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Governor Abiodun highlighted the growing commercial activities in Ogun East, which have been accompanied by an increase in criminal activities.

He stressed the need for a stronger military presence to deter criminals who migrate from neighboring states to Ogun.

“I think one of the things you can do to help us sustain the peace that we have been enjoying in Ogun State is to think of putting some base, maybe some form of Forward Operation Base in the eastern part of the state,” Abiodun said.

He elaborated on the importance of rapid response to security challenges, noting that current efforts, such as the Brigade Commander’s swift actions through OP-MESA in areas like Sagamu and Ijebu-Ode, have been crucial.

“Because every now and then, there are issues that want to test our resolve to maintain peace and order, and as you know, as a law enforcement expert, it is the speed with which you respond to these issues that determines how quickly you neutralize them,” he added.

Abiodun emphasized that the presence of a Forward Operation Base in the eastern part of Ogun would help maintain the state’s reputation as an industrial hub and reassure potential investors.

He offered full support from the state government to facilitate the establishment of this base, stating, “I think we can have men of the Nigerian Army there permanently, and we as a state will provide whatever it is that you need to facilitate so that it can happen immediately.”

The governor also praised General Mijinyawa, describing him as a well-suited leader for the role due to his education, training, and experience.

He reiterated the importance of security for economic stability and vowed to support the Army and other security agencies in their efforts.

General Mijinyawa expressed gratitude for the governor’s support, particularly in areas like welfare for fallen heroes and annual Army celebrations.

“I have ordered my officers and men to continue the good work they are doing in the state to ensure that the peace that we have continues to thrive. Let me assure you that we will step up our efforts to ensure improved security in the state,” he concluded.
