The Joint Health Sector Unions and Assembly of Healthcare Professional Associations (JOHESU/AHPA) has strongly denounced the prolonged kidnapping of Ganiyat Popoola, a registrar at the National Eye Centre in Kaduna, which occurred on December 27, 2023.
In a statement issued by its national chairman, Kabir Minjibir, and national secretary, Martin Egbanubi, JOHESU/AHPA expressed outrage over the incident, highlighting the vulnerability of healthcare workers across the country.
The union emphasized that persistent kidnappings undermine healthcare delivery to citizens and described the trend as “dangerous.”
JOHESU/AHPA expressed solidarity with the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) on their seven-day nationwide warning strike, which began on August 26, in response to the kidnapping of their colleague.
The union called on the federal government and state authorities to mobilize security agencies to secure the release of Ms. Popoola and other kidnapped victims.
Furthermore, JOHESU/AHPA urged President Bola Tinubu to implement advanced security measures to combat the rising threats of kidnapping, banditry, and organized crimes in Nigeria.
The union demands immediate action to ensure the safety and security of healthcare workers and citizens alike.
