Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, has provided financial support for the burial of Pa Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, the designer of the Nigerian flag.

The family of the late Akinkunmi made the announcement in a statement on Friday, signed by its spokesman, Mr. Samuel Akinkunmi.

Pa Akinkunmi, a native of Abeokuta in Ogun State, passed away on August 29, 2023, in Ibadan, Oyo State. He was the winner of a 1958 national competition to design a new flag for Nigeria, and his design has been the country’s national flag ever since.

The federal government had earlier promised to support the family, with the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Muhammad Idris, leading a delegation to condole with them in Ibadan. “The Nigerian government will stand by the family of Pa Akinkunmi and ensure that his legacy lives on,” Minister Idris said during the visit.

The family announced that Governor Makinde’s financial support has been received, saying, “This is to notify the general public that Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has released funds for the burial of our patriarch. We are grateful for his kind gesture and support during this difficult time.”
