Governor ‘Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has announced Monday, July 8, 2024, as a public holiday to observe and celebrate the new Islamic calendar year, Hijrah 1446AH.
According to a press release issued by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, the state government acknowledges the significance of the Hijrah in the lives of Muslim faithful.
“The Hijrah marks the migration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in 622 AD, an event of great importance in Islamic history,” the statement noted.
“As a gesture of respect and solidarity with the Muslim community, we have declared Monday, July 8th, 2024 as a work-free day in the state,” it continued.
The statement also encouraged residents to use the occasion to pray for peace, unity, and prosperity in the state and the nation at large. It emphasized the importance of reflecting on the teachings of the Hijrah and fostering community spirit and solidarity.
“The Hijrah is a time for reflection, prayer, and coming together as a community. Let us unite on this day to pray for peace, unity, and prosperity in our state and nation,” the statement concluded.
