Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has confirmed that preparations are progressing swiftly for the 2024 National Sports Festival, scheduled to take place in January 2025.

During an inspection of ongoing renovations at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Kuto, and the Ijeja Sports Centre in Abeokuta, Governor Abiodun emphasized his administration’s commitment to delivering high-standard facilities.

“This stadium has been here for about 30 to 35 years since its construction, and this marks its first significant reconstruction. We’re dedicated to this with the same commitment shown to all other projects across Ogun,” he stated.

The Governor added, “By the time this reconstruction is completed, this stadium will be among the best in the country and serve as a lasting legacy of our administration.”

Expressing satisfaction with the work and the competence of contractors, Abiodun detailed the improvements: “I’ve reviewed progress on the Olympic-size swimming pool, the tennis court, the handball court, and the main bowl. The pitch is being removed, the surface is prepared for concrete, and turf installation is on the way. The track has been cleared, and drainage channels are being updated to manage rainfall effectively.”

In addition to enhancing the MKO Abiola Stadium, Governor Abiodun assured that the Alake Sports Centre, Ijeja, would be fully rehabilitated. “This centre has faced long-term neglect, but we’re fully committed to making it suitable for the festival,” he stated. He added that all athletes will have access to a Games Village, ensuring a streamlined and convenient event.

“It’s a reflection of our commitment to sports development. We have engaged consultants to guide the games’ success, and the festival will bring attention to Ogun State,” Abiodun noted.

The Governor highlighted the positive impact the festival will have on Ogun’s youth, emphasizing sports’ role in promoting teamwork, leadership, and youth engagement. “Post-games, we hope to open the stadium to private investors who can transform it into a sports centre of excellence, empowering our youth to train and compete at higher levels,” he said.

The 2024 National Sports Festival is set to run from January 12 to January 26, 2025.
