As the 8th edition of the National Youth Games begins on Wednesday, Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun has emphasized the importance of safeguarding athletes and ensuring their eligibility.
Represented by the Commissioner for Sports Development, Governor Abiodun addressed the state’s athletes and officials in Asaba, Delta State, prior to their departure from Alake Sports Centre, Ijeja, Abeokuta.
Governor Abiodun stressed the need for vigilance and security, urging coaches and officials to ensure all athletes meet eligibility requirements to avoid disqualification.
“Delta is a different environment, and many of our athletes are teenagers who might not be familiar with the area. It is crucial that you monitor them closely and guarantee their safety at all times,” he said.
He also encouraged the athletes to perform at their best and remain cautious.
The Governor assured the team of the state government’s support throughout and after the games, expressing confidence in their ability to represent Ogun State proudly.
“We are confident that Team Ogun will showcase the talent and dedication of our young athletes,” Abiodun added.
Team Ogun will compete in 28 sports, including Boxing, Cricket, Cycling, Darts, Gymnastics, Handball, Swimming, Rugby, Scrabble, Shooting, Squash, Tennis, Abula, Badminton, Para Table Tennis, Table Tennis, Athletics, Chess, Ayo Olopon, Judo, Deaf Athletics, Para Athletics, Karate, Kung-Fu, Wrestling, and Kickboxing.
