Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has urged religious leaders to partner with the government in addressing critical issues plaguing Nigeria, including poverty and insecurity.

Speaking at the induction ceremony of the South West officers of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the 56th birthday celebration of the South West CAN President, Bishop Akintunde Akin-Akinsanya, held in Abeokuta, Governor Abiodun emphasized the vital role of religious bodies in societal development.

“As a government, we deeply acknowledge the role the Christian community plays in shaping the socio-cultural and spiritual fabric of our nation. In these trying times, it is important that we come together to address the pressing challenges of our society, primarily poverty, inequality, and insecurity,” he stated during the event.

The Governor called on leaders of CAN in the South West to embrace their responsibilities with integrity and dedication, inspiring a new generation to engage in meaningful dialogue and actions for the betterment of both the Christian faith and society.

He stressed that religious leaders have a duty to promote socio-economic development and foster unity in the country.

“The Church, as the moral compass of society, must continue to play its role in advocating for socio-economic development. This will bring fusion to the vision of our nation’s founders and leaders,” Governor Abiodun added.

He also urged religious leaders from all faiths to offer their unwavering support to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, praising the President for his leadership in navigating the economic challenges facing Nigeria.

Governor Abiodun assured the Christian community of his government’s continued support for initiatives that promote peace, unity, and religious harmony, stating that true development is only possible in an atmosphere of peace.

He also pledged to grant CAN’s request to reconstruct the Kemta Housing Estate road leading to Community Faith Avenue, promising that the road would be tarred soon.

“I hereby accept your request. We will do everything to ensure that this road is reconstructed and becomes more passable. Next time you are coming here, this road will be tarred by the grace of God,” he said.

The event also saw the decoration of Governor Abiodun as the Grand Patron of South West CAN, alongside former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who was honored as the founding father of CAN in the region.
