Former Head of State Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar has called on stakeholders to eliminate obstacles and biases hindering women’s involvement in the military.
Speaking at the 2024 Annual Defence Headquarters Gender Conference in Abuja, Abubakar emphasized the need for full inclusion of all members, regardless of gender, to enhance operational efficiency.
He stressed the importance of embracing the women, peace, and security agenda, highlighting his firsthand experience of women’s bravery and sacrifices in the military.
Abubakar called for the removal of historical barriers and biases limiting women’s participation, aiming to create a military reflecting national diversity and providing equal opportunities.
Senator George Akume and Minister of Defence Abubakar Badaru (represented by retired officials) echoed Abubakar’s sentiments, emphasizing the strategic necessity of integrating women into the military for operational effectiveness and social justice.
They noted the unique perspectives and skills women bring, enhancing decision-making and unit cohesion.
The Nigerian military has made progress in increasing female representation, achieving 22% female participation in peacekeeping, surpassing the UN’s 15% target.
The Minister of Defence reaffirmed the commitment to furthering gender-based training and promoting inclusivity within the armed forces.
