The Acting Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Dauda Biu, on Monday, re-emphasised major causes of road accidents in the country especially during the Ember months.
Biu spoke during the official flag-off of 2022 Ember months mega rally held at Ita-Oshin motor park in Abeokuta on Monday.
The theme for the rally is ” Avoid Speeding, Overloading and Unsafe Tyres to Arrive Alive “.
The FRSC acting corps marshal reiterated that drinking and driving, overloading of vehicles, use of worn out tyres, lane indiscipline, excessive speed and wrongful overtaken were mostly responsible for road crashes.
He noted that violation of road traffic rules and regulations heightened the spate and fatalities of road traffic crashes during the Ember months .
The FRSC boss explained that the rally had became imperative in view of the envisioned increase in vehicular and human movement across the country as the festive period gathered momentum.
‘ The FRSC is working assiduously to ensure a significant shift in the attitude of motorists this year 2020.
” Nigerians must be aware that frequent cases of road crashes on our roads is not linked to any spirit killing people, rather, an increase in human and vehicular movement and impatience are the major causes,” he said.
Biu appreciated the efforts of President Muhammadu Buhari who had shown commitment to the safety of lives of commuters through massive deployment of resources for the rehabilitation and construction of roads across the country.
He stated that the FRSC had deployed 800 patrol vehicles, 100 ambulances , 27 tow trucks and 83 motor bikes as part of the patrol logistics for the Ember months.
In his speech, Gov. Dapo Abiodun of Ogun , said that government had continually committed to policies and programmes that would guarantee safety and enhanced free traffic flow on all the roads within the state.
Abiodun re-emphasised the commitment of the state government to road safety while also expressing concern over the wanton loss of human lives, and continuous damage to properties occasioned by incidences of road traffic crashes.
The governor, represented by his Deputy, Mrs Noimot Salako-Oyedele, called on all groups including religious bodies and community leaders, transport unions and fleet operators to own the project of making the roads safe by complying to rules.
Stakeholders at the event included representatives of transport unions, Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) among others.
