Former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has paid tribute to the late traditional ruler of Akinale Town, Oba Olufemi Ogunleye, describing his passing as a “shocking and great loss” to Owu land, Ogun State, and the nation.
Oba Ogunleye, 79, passed away on Wednesday in the United Kingdom after a brief illness, just two months shy of his 80th birthday.
Obasanjo, currently in South Africa for President Cyril Ramaphosa’s inauguration, expressed his shock and sadness upon learning of Oba Ogunleye’s demise, recalling their recent conversation about his travel plans.
The Owu Traditional Council also announced the monarch’s passing, remembering him as a “peace loving, progressive, and bridge builder.”
Oba Ogunleye is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren, including Bamidele Ogunleye of the Ogun State Broadcasting Corporation.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family.
