In a tragic incident, five police officers returning from election duty in Edo State lost their lives in a fatal road accident early Tuesday morning along the Zaria-Kano road.
The crash occurred near Karfi Village, by the Trailer Park, involving a trailer and a Toyota Hummer Bus with registration number 14B101KN, belonging to Kano Line.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) spokesperson for Kano State Command, CRC Abdullahi Labaran, confirmed the accident in a statement, revealing that the officers were on their way back from their special assignment during the weekend’s governorship election in Edo State.
“The crash, reported by the Kura Local Government Police Division, involved fifteen individuals. Sadly, five lives were lost, and ten others sustained various degrees of injuries,” Labaran stated.
According to Labaran, preliminary investigations indicated that the accident was caused by excessive speeding, which resulted in the Hummer bus driver losing control and colliding with the parked trailer.
The officers, members of the Nigeria Police Force, had been deployed for election monitoring during the Edo governorship poll.
The FRSC’s Sector Commander, ACM Ahmed Tijjani Mohammed, expressed his deep condolences to the Kano State Commissioner of Police, the Nigeria Police Force, and the families of the deceased officers.
He also extended his wishes for a quick recovery to the ten injured individuals.
CRC Labaran urged motorists to strictly adhere to traffic rules and regulations, emphasizing the dangers of excessive speeding and overloading.
He remarked, “Motorists must avoid traffic infractions like speeding and overloading to prevent such tragedies in the future.”
