The federal government has issued an immediate six-week suspension for the 13 students allegedly involved in the bullying of a fellow student at Federal Government College (FGC) Enugu on November 7, 2024.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, announced the suspension to facilitate a thorough investigation by the disciplinary committee established by the Federal Ministry of Education. This move follows the circulation of a disturbing video on social media showing a group of students assaulting an SS1 student.

In a statement released on Wednesday in Abuja, the Director of Press and Public Relations in the Ministry, Folasade Boriowo, confirmed the minister’s actions. “The Ministry of Education is committed to ensuring a safe and conducive learning environment in all federal schools across Nigeria,” Dr. Alausa was quoted as saying. He assured parents, guardians, and the public that every necessary step would be taken to restore peace and protect students at FGC Enugu.

The bullying incident came to public attention when a video was shared on various social media platforms, depicting the assault on an SS1 day student by a group of students. The Ministry of Education’s findings indicated that the attack occurred on November 7, 2024.

To address the matter, the Ministry has set up a disciplinary committee to investigate the incident. Based on the ongoing investigation, all 13 students involved have been placed on suspension for six weeks while the committee concludes its report.

Furthermore, the Ministry has directed the School-Based Management Committee (SBMC) to work alongside security agencies to ensure a thorough investigation. This includes exploring any potential links with external groups. Immediate security measures have been put in place at the college, with law enforcement agencies now involved to enhance safety and review existing security protocols.

The Ministry also stated that counseling and rehabilitation support would be offered to the students involved to help address underlying issues and promote their successful reintegration into a positive school environment.

“The Minister urges all stakeholders, including parents, school authorities, and security agencies, to collaborate in fostering a safe environment where students can thrive,” the statement concluded.
