The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has launched the demolition of buildings on the right of way of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road, starting at the Mani Chula Beach, Oniru Waterfront on Saturday.
The exercise marks the beginning of the long-awaited project, which aims to enhance connectivity and economic growth in the region.
In a statement, Minister Umahi assured affected property owners that adequate compensation has been factored into the project and urged them to consider the greater good of the initiative. The demolition process is expected to continue for several days.
Prior to the commencement of the demolition, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Korede Keisha, had instructed property owners whose structures were marked for demolition to visit the Ministry’s Secretariat in Lagos to complete the necessary processes.
The demolition squad began removing marked properties on Saturday, as scheduled.
The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road project aims to improve transportation infrastructure and boost economic development in the region.
While the demolition process may cause temporary inconvenience, the government has pledged to provide fair compensation to affected property owners.
