The Minister of Education, Prof Tahir Mamman, convened a crucial meeting with representatives of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Wednesday to address the union’s demands and prevent a nationwide strike.
The meeting, initially scheduled for Monday, aimed to ensure security is enhanced across universities and prevent another strike in the sector.
In attendance were ASUU President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, past presidents, including Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, and top management staff of the Federal Ministry of Education.
Mamman emphasized the Federal Government’s commitment to deepening security in the education system, ensuring students remain on campus, and doing what is right. The meeting then dissolved into a closed-door session.
The meeting comes after ASUU threatened a nationwide strike over the Federal Government’s alleged failure to meet its demands, including honoring the 2009 renegotiated agreement, addressing welfare matters, funding universities, and stopping the proliferation of universities.
The union’s demands were part of the resolutions reached at its national executive council meeting held at the University of Ibadan.
