…Calls for Major Overhaul of Nigeria’s Political System to Avoid Collapse
In a recent discussion on rescuing Nigeria from the brink of collapse, Dr. Oluwatoyin Jokosenumi, former Director at the Central Bank of Nigeria, has advocated for a fundamental change in the country’s political structure.
Speaking on the monthly program Boiling Point Arena hosted by Dr. Ayo Arowojolu and broadcast live on Sweet 107.1FM, Jokosenumi proposed that the current system, which allows for a four-year presidential and gubernatorial term with a renewable option, be abandoned in the 2027 general elections.
Jokosenumi criticized the existing political framework, arguing that it has enabled a corrupt political class to exploit constitutional loopholes for personal gain.
“The greedy political class has capitalized on these loopholes to live lavishly on the nation’s resources. Once they are in power, they amass wealth and perpetuate themselves in office, often at the expense of others,” he said.
He called for a shift to a one-term, five-year tenure for all elected officials, whether at the national or subnational level.
“The strongest recommendation I want to make is to implement a single term of five years for everyone. The idea of two terms must die. We don’t need it. The average life expectancy here is between 55 to 60 years,” Jokosenumi explained.
“Our leaders often serve for years, first as Governors, then Senators, and even Ministers. They monopolize office while others are denied the opportunity to serve.”
Jokosenumi further criticized the current leaders for their inability to foster genuine development and urged for a thorough re-examination of the political system.
“We need to revisit our political foundation and challenge the political class to ensure significant amendments and reforms are made to the constitution by 2027,” he said.
The program also featured keynote speaker Oba Prof. Saka Matemilola, the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, and guest speaker Prof. Wùnmi Iledare, a petroleum economics expert.
