Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas has resigned on Monday to assume the role of the European Union’s next foreign policy chief, following her nomination by EU leaders. Kallas, who has led Estonia since 2021, submitted her resignation letter to the president and will continue in office until a new government is established and sworn in.
In an interview with Estonian public radio on Monday, Kallas described her tenure as challenging, starting amid the peak of the Covid crisis. She also announced her intention to step down as leader of the Reform party later this summer.
Kallas, known for her critical stance on Russia, was selected last month for the EU’s top diplomatic post, pending approval by the European Parliament. Discussions are underway among Estonia’s ruling coalition parties — Reform, Social Democrats, and Estonia 200 — to form a new government. The Reform party has put forward climate minister Kristen Michal as their nominee for the next prime minister.
