The Enugu State government has officially confirmed a cholera outbreak, with 10 reported deaths linked to the disease.
The announcement was made in a memo signed by Samuel Egwuonwu, Director of Medical Services, on behalf of the state’s commissioner for health.
“I am directed to notify you of an outbreak of Cholera disease in Enugu State. There are reports of so many cases, out of which about 10 people might have died from it,” the memo read. It further stated, “The state ministry of health and partners have started making moves to contain this situation.”
The memo called on healthcare providers and the general public to stay alert for symptoms associated with cholera, such as acute diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, and vomiting. It stressed the importance of maintaining a high level of suspicion in diagnosing such cases, especially during this outbreak.
In addition, the state’s health ministry urged individuals and healthcare facilities to enhance infection prevention and control measures, while advising the public to promptly report any suspected cases of cholera for swift action.
