The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the rule of law and due process following the recent arraignment of 76 individuals on charges that include terrorism, arson, and treasonable felony.

In a statement released Saturday, the Police emphasized that all legal protocols were observed throughout the suspects’ detention and arraignment.

Addressing an incident that occurred during Friday’s court session, where six of the suspects reportedly fainted, the NPF suggested this was a staged attempt to attract public sympathy.

“This deliberate and scripted manner was employed to draw negative attention,” the Police stated, refuting claims that the suspects’ conditions reflected any mishandling by law enforcement.

The Force’s Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, stressed the gravity of the charges, noting they involve “serious allegations encompassing the destruction of public property and threats to national security.”

He added, “In managing the detention and arraignment of these suspects, the NPF has rigorously adhered to legal provisions to ensure fairness and accountability under the rule of law.”

The Police emphasized their commitment to safeguarding the rights of each detainee, including access to medical care.

“Throughout this process, the Police have worked to balance justice with compassion, ensuring that each suspect’s basic rights and privileges are respected,” Adejobi said.

Following Friday’s incident, immediate medical assistance was provided to the affected individuals, underscoring the Police’s commitment to detainee welfare.

“Medical aid was promptly provided, demonstrating the Police Force’s dedication to the welfare of those in its custody, irrespective of the allegations they face,” the statement read.

The NPF also addressed the public’s concern over the treatment of young suspects, clarifying that under Nigerian law, individuals who have reached the age of criminal responsibility are accountable for their actions.

Adejobi added, “This principle aligns with global practices, where accountability is upheld for young individuals who commit serious offences,” citing examples from jurisdictions such as the United Kingdom.

The Police however assured the public of their transparency and adherence to human rights standards. “The Nigeria Police Force is committed to aligning with best practices, upholding both the rule of law and respect for human dignity,” Adejobi affirmed, urging the public to approach the case without bias.
