Ekweremadu returns to National Assembly for 5th time

Reading time: 2 Minutes

The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was at about 12:01am on Monday declared winner of the Enugu West Senatorial seat in a landslide victory, making it the fifth time the legislator would be elected into the National Assembly.

Declaring the result at Awgu, the Returning Officer, Prof. Douglas Nwabueze, said the senator polled a total of 86,088 votes to beat his closest rival, Mrs. Juliet Ibekaku-Nwagwu, of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who polled 15,187 votes.

Senator Ekweremadu was first elected in 2003, and reelected consecutively in 2007, 2011, 2015 and now again in 2019, all on a PDP ticket

Reacting to his victory, Ekweremadu expressed gratitude to his constituents for reelecting him into the Senate for a fifth time, noting that it was a record of its own in the eastern part of the country.

“I am not taking this election for granted, especially by the unprecedented nature of my election. This is the first time within this part of Nigeria that someone would be elected consecutively for five times into the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It has never happened and I am not taking it for granted. I indeed feel very humbled and I give all the glory and thanks to the Almighty God who has made it possible,” he stated.

“I must also thank my friends and associates, the great people of Enugu West – very industrious people, highly civilized people, highly accomplished people, very educated people – who, in spite of the fact that I am just a little boy from Mpu, have given me this unprecedented opportunity.

“Recall also that about a year ago, we went through a lot of storm for the major part of 2018. So, nobody believed that a day like this would come when I would stand for an election and be declared winner. So, only God can make that possible.

“I believe that what is expected of us this time is to give back to the society that has given us this opportunity and those that have given us this confidence to ensure that this confidence is not misplaced. So, a lot is lying on our shoulders. I would like to say clearly that we will not disappoint Nigerians.”

Ekweremadu appreciated Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, the press, election monitors and observers as well as the electorate for their professionalism and peaceful conduct of the election.

“We have had challenges in different parts of the country, but we thank God that Enugu State is different because the governor has built a peaceful atmosphere over the past three and half years and this has manifested in the peaceful conduct of the elections. I am not sure we witnessed any casualty in any part of Enugu State. This exactly what we looked to, what we prayed for, what we expected and this is what democracy should look like. I believe that other states should come to Enugu State and learn how to conduct themselves in elections,” he added.

Meanwhile, in the two Federal Constituencies of Enugu West, Hon. Toby Okechukwu of the PDP garnered 50,173 votes to retain the Aninri/Awgu/Oji River Federal Constituency seat, beating closest opponent, Mr. VinMartin Ilo of the APC, who scored 8,354 votes, whereas Hon. Dennis Amadi of the PDP polled 37,755 to secure his reelection to represent Ezeagu/Udi Federal Constituency, defeating Mr. Joseph Mammel of the APC, who scored 5,671.
