The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has released Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, on bail following his recent detention over bribery allegations.
The controversial cross-dresser was intercepted at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos late Thursday night while attempting to board a KLM flight to Amsterdam, en route to London.
Bobrisky, who shared his experience on social media, claimed he was injured during the EFCC’s intervention.
“Nigerians, help me, EFCC just arrested me. I’m badly injured,” he posted, sparking widespread reactions online.
He was then transferred to the EFCC headquarters in Abuja, where he was questioned about his alleged attempt to bribe EFCC officials.
Reports circulated that Bobrisky had purportedly claimed in a voice recording, shared by social media critic Martins Otse (aka VeryDarkMan), that he paid N15 million to the EFCC to drop money laundering charges against him.
On Friday night, Bobrisky successfully arranged his bail and was subsequently released. The EFCC’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, confirmed the release on Saturday, though he declined to provide additional details on the ongoing investigation.
A source close to the case revealed that Bobrisky, in his statement, denied making any payments to EFCC officials as a bribe. “He denied everything about releasing money to any official as a bribe to drop the money laundering charges against him.
He denied it in his statement. He said the fellow who posted the voice note should come over to justify it. He said nobody requested money from him in the EFCC and he didn’t give anyone anything,” the source said.
This unfolding incident has drawn attention due to the high-profile nature of the claims and Bobrisky’s substantial social media following, which has fueled a growing public debate on the matter.
