Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has appointed Professor Hauwa Biu as board chairman of a newly established Borno state education trust fund. Also appointed is Hon. Maina Yaumi as executive secretary of the fund.

The appointments were announced by the governor’s Special Adviser on Public Relations and Strategy, Malam Isa Gusau in a statement released on Wednesday evening.

The spokesman explained that the trust fund, created in 2019 with 13 board members, is to manage and disburse money for the purpose of executing projects and programmes in all categories of public schools across Borno state. It is also to receive and approve projects within its limits and to monitor and evaluate execution of such projects in public schools.

The law establishing the trust fund provides that, Borno state board of internal revenue is to collect education levies from entities listed by the the new law and to promptly remit such levies to the education trust fund which is empowered to monitor collection of the levies.

Governor Zulum, has in addition to a chairman and executive secretary, appointed 11 board members from which Alh. Umara Kyari is to represent Borno North, Hon. Babagana Malarima to represent Borno Central and Lydia Goro to represent Borno South.

Gusau’s statement added that eight other members of the board will each represent Borno’s ministries of Education, Higher Education, Finance, Local Government and Emirates Affairs, Justice, Trade, Investment and Tourism; the Universal Basic Education Board and the Borno state university.

All 13 board members of the education trust fund will be inaugurated at a date to be communicated soon, the statement concluded.
