The Presidential CNG Initiative (PCNG-i) has voiced its concern over the recent explosion at a NIPCO CNG Station in Benin City, Edo State, involving an illegally modified vehicle.
The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, left several people injured, although no fatalities were reported.
In a statement released on Thursday, the agency sympathized with those injured in the explosion and expressed relief that no lives were lost. The investigation revealed that the cylinder of the vehicle had been improperly welded and was not approved for CNG use.
“The police and regulatory authorities are conducting a thorough inquiry, and we are collaborating with them,” the PCNG-i stated.
The incident has highlighted the importance of safety within the CNG ecosystem, particularly the need for strict adherence to standards and regulations.
“This underscores the significance of the upcoming Nigeria Gas Vehicle Monitoring System, which aims to enhance safety in the CNG sector,” the agency noted, urging stakeholders to support the regulatory initiative and ensure compliance with safety protocols.
The PCNG-i emphasized that only accredited conversion centers should be used for CNG vehicle modifications, and safe handling of compressed natural gas should be prioritized.
“Just like petrol, the safe handling of CNG is essential for everyone’s safety,” it added, reiterating its commitment to a #SafetyFirst approach.
The agency urged the public to engage verified technicians and accredited centers for CNG-related work, stressing that while CNG is a safe alternative fuel, ensuring proper installation and compliance with safety standards is crucial to prevent similar incidents.
