In a significant pre-election security operation, the Nigeria Police Force has apprehended two political thugs in Edo State as part of a crackdown on electoral violence.
The arrests, which took place during an overnight raid, were confirmed by Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a statement released on Saturday.
Adejobi revealed that the suspects, identified as Edwin Obanor, 43, and Audu Tajudeen, 41, were arrested in separate incidents across different locations in the state. Obanor, a suspected leader of an armed group, was apprehended around 9 p.m. at Oredo Ward 4, while Tajudeen, who is associated with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ugbogbo Quarters, Igara Akoko, was arrested in the Igara Akoko area.
The operation, which came in response to intelligence reports of planned violence, resulted in the recovery of several illegal weapons. “Three cut-to-size locally fabricated pistols were seized from Obanor, while Tajudeen was found in possession of a locally made gun,” Adejobi disclosed.
Describing the arrests as a major step in ensuring a peaceful election, Adejobi stated, “This is a significant breakthrough in our efforts to curb electoral violence.” He further emphasized that the police are fully prepared to maintain law and order, working alongside other security agencies to prevent any disruptions. “The Nigeria Police Force will not tolerate any violence or disorderliness during the election in Edo State,” he affirmed.
Both suspects are currently in custody and will face prosecution in accordance with the law. Adejobi also urged the public to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity, reiterating the force’s commitment to ensuring the safety of citizens during the governorship election.
This operation is part of broader efforts by security forces to secure the electoral process and deter any form of violence as voters head to the polls.
