Tragedy struck in Maiduguri, Borno State, on Sunday when a police sergeant, Linus Wadzani, shot and killed his father, retired Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Wadzani Ntasiri, following a heated argument.

The incident occurred at the family’s home in the Modugannari area of Maiduguri Metropolis.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Nahum Daso, Sgt Linus, a mobile police personnel attached to MOPOL 6 Maiduguri and the Borno State House of Assembly complex, returned home around 4:30pm and engaged in a fierce argument with his father, which ended in the tragic shooting.

The father was shot multiple times with an AK47 rifle and died instantly.

The family member who spoke to newsmen at the deceased’s residence said that no one else was at home during the incident, and therefore, there was no eyewitness to provide a detailed account of what happened.

The police have confirmed the incident and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.

“A patrol team of the police command rescued the situation on receiving a distress call. The team disarmed him and collected the AK47 rifle. On personal interrogation of Sgt Linus, he confessed to being under the influence of alcohol and other hard substances when he shot the father.

“A forensic team from the command has been assembled and blood samples of the Sgt collected for sampling to determine his mental status before the crime,” he said.

The PPRO warned members of the public, especially those selling alcohol not to sell to any policeman on uniform or duty.
