Concerned by the recent unprofessional conducts of the some men of the the Nigeria Police Force leading to the death of a player with the Remo Stars Football Club, late Kaseem Tiamiu, the Ogun State House of Assembly has urged the State Command of the Nigeria Police to caution its officers and men to be more civil in the discharge of their duty in securing lives and properties of residents in the State.
The Speaker, Rt. Hon Olakunle Oluomo, who threw the challenge also condemned in strong terms the events leading to the death of the late footballer during a plenary held at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
According to him, the unfortunate incident caused by the unprofessional conduct of some operatives of Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) the previous week led to the unfortunate incident, while tasking the top echelon of the force to step up machineries at monitoring their officers and men towards desisting from abuse of human rights during security operations.
Commending the timely intervention of the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun and the Inspector General of Police, the Assistant Inspector General of Police in the Zone for their swift response to the incident, Oluomo called for more training for the security personnel to further improve on their conducts while admonishing youth to be reflect sense of responsibility and dignity in their dressings.
Earlier in their separate submissions under personal explanation, Honourable member representing Sagamu I, Abdul Bashir Oladunjoye and his Sagamu II counterpart, Ademola Adeniran intimated the Assembly of the misconduct of the SARS Operative, leading to the untimely death of a promising young footballer, saying that numerous innocent citizens had suffered illegal harassment and subsequent detention from the SARS Operatives under the guise of embarking on security raids within the Sagamu axis of the State.
In another development, the Speaker has intimated that the South West Conference of Speakers, alongside the Majority Leaders, Clerks and Attorneys General from the six South West States including Ogun, Lagos, Osun, Ondo, Oyo and Ekiti had met the previous day to finetune the recommendations from stakeholders during a public hearing for the passage of the bill on Ogun State Security Network Agency Law and Amotekun Corps, 2020 into law.
Also, a Bill titled: “The Traditional Rulers (Installation and Burial Rites) Law”, 2020 scaled first reading on the floor of the Assembly. The bill with long title “HB No. 036/OG/2020-A Bill for a law to provide for the preservation, protection and exercise by Traditional Rulers of their fundamental rights to be installed and buried according to their religion or belief and for other related matters” was read for the first time by the Ag. Clerk, Deji Adeyemo before the lawmakers.
