COVID – 19 SHOULD NOT BE TRIVIALISED, NYSC DG

Reading time: 3 Minutes

The Director – General, National Youth Service Corps, Brig Gen Shuaibu Ibrahim and the Management of the Scheme extend warm felicitations to all Corps Members that have ensured consistent observance of the rules bordering on prevention of the spread of Coronavirus.

It is very worrisome to note that some Nigerians still indulge in self – deceit and very risky behaviours which undermine the above rules, especially the social distancing and the stay – at – home order.

Frighteningly, some parts of North America as at today are hard – hit, harbouring a quarter of the over one million world population infected by the virus. For instance, on Friday, 4th April, 2020, The United States of America lost one thousand, one hundred individuals to the pandemic in a single day.

In Europe, thousands of people have been lost to the virus which is a global – wide assault to humanity.

Middle East is equally grappling with the fatalities arising from the virus. It is very painful to note that Iran is having issues with the burial of victims, as most owners of burial grounds are rejecting the dead bodies, arising from the morbid fear of getting infected by the corpses. That prompted the Government to move the bodies to the desert where they are buried in unmarked graves.

Indeed, the world has a debilitating challenge at hand which must be fought collectively and with a single – mind to defeat .

As at today, Africa has the least numbers of infected victims and casualties which should never be taken for granted.

With the benefit of the above scenario, Management hereby implores Corps Members to take seriously the various campaigns against the spread of COVID – 19, and be vanguards of the campaigns.

Management salutes the Corps Members who have since keyed into this battle such as the Corps Medical Personnel who have sacrificed a lot for the Country by complementing the medical teams treating the victims of the pandemic, as well as those that have produced hand sanitisers which are being distributed to people and institutions free of charge as part of the NYSC community development initiative; and a fallout of the Scheme’s skill acquisition and entrepreneurship development programme.

Corps Members, you are enjoined to adhere strictly to the rules of social distancing. Do not shake hands with anyone, or stay very close to people.

If you have a compelling reason to go out, be safety conscious. Maintain at least six feet distance from people, in order to avoid droplets of saliva or phelgm from an infected person coming in contact with your mouth, eyes or nostrils when the victim coughs or sneezes. Adopt the cardinal rule of seeing everybody as a potential vector of the virus, as some infected persons do not manifest symptoms of the disease, yet can infect people.

Always wash your hands thoroughly and properly with soap and running water for at least forty seconds.

Avoid touching your mouth, eyes and nostrils with your hands, even while putting on the surgical gloves as the virus will find easy passage to your body through those channels.

Ensure consistent use of alcohol – based hand sanitisers and add drops of dettol to your bathing water.

Employ the use of bleach to mop your floor and clean the house. Its active ingredient, sodium hypochlorite is very effective in killing bacteria, fungi and virus.

When you sneeze, use your inner arm/elbow to cover your mouth, or use the tissue paper and dispose it immediately and hygienically.

Above all, staying at home remains the best antidote to infection. Do not go on visit – spree, as we are not on holiday. Rather, this should be a period for sober reflection and self appraisal. You are encouraged to channel your time and energy to profitable activities such as improvement of yourself knowledge wise.

The Director – General wishes you to be alive, and in good health to complete your service and be a great asset to the Nation.

Stay safe.
