A Grade A Customary Court sitting in Mapo, Ibadan, has dissolved the 14-year-old marriage between Omolara Busari and her estranged husband, Olanrewaju Busari, following accusations of infidelity and the use of a charm to test loyalty.

Omolara, a mother of two and a footwear trader at Ogunpa market, pleaded with the court to dissolve the marriage after her husband, upon returning from Lagos in 2020, began doubting her faithfulness.

In her counter-argument, Omolara explained, “Lanre’s attitude completely changed toward me immediately after he came back from Lagos where he had gone to seek greener pasture. He refused to talk to me, ejected me from our bedroom, and made me sleep in the corridor after accusing me of infidelity.”

She further revealed that Olanrewaju placed a charm on the ground and asked her to cross over it to prove her innocence.

“He placed a charm on the ground and told me to cross over it, but I declined. Later, Olanrewaju began to insult and disrespect my parents who agreed with me not to swear by crossing over any voodoo,” Omolara said.

Despite interventions from concerned individuals, Omolara claimed her husband remained embittered and eventually abandoned the home.

Earlier in the hearing, Olanrewaju, a generator dealer at Ogunpa market, told the court that their union had suffered irreparable damage due to stress, lack of care, absence of love, and constant fighting.

He accused Omolara of telling him not to question her movements. “Apart from the enormous stress that I have endured, she told me that I cannot question her movements, which is why I decided to walk out of the union,” Olanrewaju explained.

He also accused Omolara of bringing their children to his shop to demand money, despite his regular provision of weekly allowances for their welfare.

Olanrewaju asked the court to restrain Omolara from further embarrassing him publicly.

In her ruling, the court’s president, Mrs. S.M. Akintayo, dissolved the marriage, noting that Olanrewaju could not be forced to remain in a relationship he no longer wanted.

She awarded custody of the two children to Omolara, ruling that she was in the best position to care for them.

The court also directed Olanrewaju to provide for the children’s education, medical needs, and overall welfare.

Additionally, Mrs. Akintayo issued a restraining order, preventing Omolara from disturbing or interfering in Olanrewaju’s private life, and granted him reasonable access to the children.
