Commissioner Charges Women to Enrol At Skills Acquisition Centres for Financial Literacy

The Honourable Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA), Mrs. Cecilia Bolaji Dada, has charged women to enrol in adult literacy courses being offered at the 18 Skills Acquisition Centres across the State to take advantage of the digital space and develop their businesses.

Speaking on Thursday during the Third Quarter Mega Empowerment initiative organised by the Lagos State Government at the Skills Acquisition Centre, Egbeda, the Commissioner reiterated that the empowerment materials like Milling and Sewing machines, Hair-Dryers, Barbing Clippers with Sterilisers as well as Generators, Popcorn machines, Sharwama Grillers and Toasting Machines would be distributed amongst women to aid for their budding businesses.

Dada, represented at the event by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Oluyemi Kalesanwo, informed that the growth of technology has enabled more homegrown business enterprises and online business activities to reach new prospects while reducing the cost of putting up such businesses.

“The Ministry, charged with the mandate to promote and enhance the economic upliftment and protection of Women and Youths, will not relent in its efforts to ensure every woman in Lagos State is fully empowered not only to add value to themselves but also become employers of labour”, she added.

Also speaking at the event, the Elegbeda of Egbeda land, Oba Abdulahmed Aremu Omogoriola Orelope, urged women to take advantage of the empowerment programme to provide for their families and contribute their quota to the socio-economic development of the State.

While commending the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Baale Dada-Yeye, Ikola community, High Chief Wasiu Taiwo, admonished the beneficiaries of the empowerment scheme not to sell the equipment but to make judicious use of them for financial independence.

The event also had in attendance the Baale of Ayiwa, Chief Asimi Rasak; Osi Baba Oja, Chief Johnson Afose; Baale Abaranje, Chief Lamidi Ayinde Hassan; Baale Isooto Community, Chief Taiwo Kolawole and top government officials from WAPA.
