Ile-Ife, Osun State – Tragedy struck at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) on Thursday when the ceiling of the Oduduwa Hall Amphitheatre collapsed during a lecture, injuring several students.

The incident occurred during a SER lecture, when a torrential downpour accompanied by a whirlwind caused the ceiling to fall, trapping some students underneath.

Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and rescued those injured, taking them to the University’s Medical and Health Centre for treatment.

According to a release by the Public Relations Officer of the University, Mr. Abiodun Olarewaju, two students with more severe injuries were later transferred to the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC) for further medical attention.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, has appealed for calm and urged students and staff to continue their academic and administrative activities without any disruptions.

“The University management has sealed off the amphitheatre until further notice to ensure the safety of students and staff”.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing to determine the cause of the ceiling collapse and prevent similar incidents in the future.
