In Ekiti State, a 20-year-old cattle rearer, Mohamadu Bello, has been charged before the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Ado Ekiti for allegedly destroying farm produce valued at N3.8 million, belonging to four individuals.
According to Inspector Elijah Adejare, the police prosecutor, Bello committed the alleged damages on August 10 in Ido Ile Ekiti.
The prosecution claims that Bello caused destruction to produce worth N300,000 owned by Awiye Olusola, N2.8 million owned by Oni Samson, N300,000 owned by Igbalajobi Adeyomi, and N400,000 owned by Akinola Sunday.
These actions, Adejare argued, violate Section 363 of the Ekiti State Criminal Law, 2021.
Adejare requested an adjournment to review the case file and present witnesses. The defendant’s counsel, Mr. Adeyemi Egbebi, sought bail for Bello, promising he would not flee.
Chief Magistrate Mr. Bankole Oluwasanmi granted bail of N80,000 with a surety of equal amount and scheduled the next court date for September 6.
In a related case, Chief Magistrate Mr. Abayomi Adeosun granted bail to Hammed Abdulrasheed, 22, and Abiodun Aluko, 42, who were charged with stealing a motorbike valued at N1.2 million.
Sergeant Alice Ojo, the prosecutor, indicated that Abdurasheed allegedly stole the bike, and Aluko was found with it.
These allegations breach Sections 302 and 343 of the Ekiti State Criminal Law, 2021.
Both defendants were granted bail of N250,000 each with sureties of equal amounts. Their case is set for hearing on September 27.
