In a major move towards promoting public safety and protecting investments in construction, the Ogun State Government has mandated that any building project above two floors must obtain an All Risk Insurance Policy Certificate.
This directive is in accordance with the Ogun State Building Production Management Authority Regulation (OGBPMA) 2022.
The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Olatunji Odunlami, announced the new regulation at a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Olusegun Osoba Press Centre, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, on Wednesday.
Odunlami emphasized that the insurance policy should be maintained by the contractor or developer, covering both human and material assets throughout the construction period.
In his words, “The coverage extends to innocent passers-by and their property, as well as adjacent properties, humans, and animals domiciled in them.”
The policy ensures protection against any form of injury, loss, or damage, safeguarding all persons lawfully accessing the site, building materials, and other equipment.
Beyond the construction phase, property owners and subsequent occupiers are also required to obtain a Building Insurance Policy. This policy will protect the structure from fire outbreaks, collapse, damage, and other unforeseen incidents.
Odunlami highlighted the government’s dedication to reducing construction site accidents and fostering a risk management culture.
He stated that, in addition to public safety, the initiative aims to shield developers from financial losses, thereby contributing to a resilient and sustainable building industry in Ogun State.
Building Industry Safety and Collaboration
The Permanent Secretary, Engr. Sakirudeen Salaam, addressed stakeholders earlier, noting that the meeting aimed to publicize the legal framework guiding construction activities in the state.
He encouraged collaboration between the government and industry professionals to achieve a well-organized physical planning structure.
Speaking on behalf of the insurance sector, Mr. Yomi Babalola, an underwriter, commended the government’s initiative.
He assured that the insurance companies are ready to work with the state to implement these measures and protect the public from unforeseen risks.
The Ogun State Government’s push for construction safety through mandatory insurance underscores its commitment to developing a more secure, organized, and resilient building sector.
