The Borno State government has announced the temporary closure of all public and private primary and secondary schools for two weeks in response to severe flooding that has displaced many residents across the state.
The closure will remain in effect until Monday, September 23.
In a statement issued on Monday, Grema Bulama, acting director of school services, explained the situation: “Due to the ongoing flooding and its significant impact, the Borno State Ministry of Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation has directed the closure of all schools across the state. We ask all parties to adhere to this directive.”
The statement noted that the initial reopening of schools was scheduled for Monday, September 9, but many facilities were occupied by individuals displaced by the floods. This has led to significant logistical challenges, prompting the state to extend the closure.
In Gwange Ward of Maiduguri, there was a brief confrontation when displaced individuals resisted government attempts to vacate a school where they have been sheltering since the previous week. This incident highlights the severity of the flood’s impact on local communities.
In addition to the school closures, the Borno government has established a flood emergency response committee led by the Secretary to the State Government, Bukar Tijjani. The committee is tasked with coordinating the response to the flooding crisis and ensuring effective support for affected residents.
The Borno State Ministry of Education expressed regret for any inconvenience caused by the school closures and thanked the public for their understanding and cooperation during this challenging time.
