The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit, commonly known as the task force, has issued a stern warning to residents regarding the blocking of public roads for social events.
This announcement comes as the agency seeks to address growing concerns over the disruptions caused by such gatherings.
CSP Adetayo Akerele, the Chairman of the task force, highlighted the negative impact of these events on both residents and motorists in a statement released on Tuesday, which was signed by the agency’s spokesperson, Gbadeyan Abdulraheem.
He emphasized that social gatherings, including religious events that interfere with public order, would no longer be tolerated.
“Obstructing public roads not only inconveniences law-abiding citizens but also poses significant security and safety risks,” Mr. Akerele stated.
He condemned the practice of individuals or groups commandeering public spaces, particularly roads, for personal use, calling it “unacceptable.”
The chairman referenced a recent intervention by the task force on Raymond Njoku Street in Ikoyi, where a social event was halted due to complaints about traffic obstruction and noise pollution.
He confirmed that the gathering was shut down and several key organizers were arrested.
“We are also aware of similar events on streets such as Lawani Street in Yaba, Ganiyu Lamina Street at Ijaiye Ojokoro, and other locations across Lagos metropolis”.
“We are appealing to those involved in this practice to desist forthwith or face serious legal consequences. Blocking roads for parties or religious events is illegal, and those involved will face the full weight of the law,” he stated.
Mr. Akerele urged residents to utilize designated event centers or secure the necessary permits from relevant authorities before organizing gatherings that may affect public roadways.
He assured that the agency, in collaboration with other security agencies, would conduct regular monitoring and enforcement actions to prevent any further illegal road blockages.
