A bill proposing constitutional amendments to facilitate diaspora voting has passed its second reading in the House of Representatives.

The bill, co-sponsored by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen and Sodeeq Abdullahi, seeks to amend the 2022 Electoral Act, enabling Nigerians living abroad to participate in elections.

The bill was initially approved for a second reading in July and referred to the Committee on Electoral Matters for detailed consideration. Following its renewed progress on Tuesday, it has now been directed to the Constitution Amendment Committee for further legislative scrutiny.

In presenting the bill, Speaker Abbas Tajudeen emphasized the importance of including the Nigerian diaspora in the electoral process. “This bill underscores our commitment to ensuring that every Nigerian, regardless of location, has the opportunity to contribute to our nation’s democratic process,” he stated.

Similarly, co-sponsor Sodeeq Abdullahi noted the potential of diaspora voting to enhance Nigeria’s democracy. “Nigerians abroad contribute significantly to the country through remittances and expertise. It is only fair they have a voice in electing their leaders,” Abdullahi remarked.

The proposed legislation aims to address the logistical and legal challenges of enabling diaspora voting, a longstanding aspiration among Nigerians living overseas.

The bill’s progression reflects the House’s ongoing efforts to expand electoral participation and strengthen democratic practices in the country. Further deliberations and amendments are expected as the committee examines the bill’s provisions.
