The Bayelsa State government has offered immediate employment to 12 teachers who graduated in “special needs” education from Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Port Harcourt.
Governor Douye Diri made the announcement when he received the graduates at the Government House in Yenagoa on Tuesday.
“We are committed to training teachers for special needs children in our education sector,” Governor Diri said. “I am satisfied with our investment in the training of these special needs teachers, who will impart their knowledge on children with impairment in the state.”
The governor commended the Education Development Trust Fund (EDTF) executive secretary, Alice Atuwo, and board members for the initiative, which he inherited from the previous administration. “I hereby direct the Ministry of Education to employ all 12 of you,” he said.
Ms. Atuwo, EDTF executive secretary, noted that the board enrolled 15 teachers of Bayelsa State origin for the training, but only 12 graduated. “With this training, our state now has its own trained teachers in special needs schools,” she said.
The governor also announced that the school for special needs students would continue to enjoy free tuition, feeding, and uniforms, as part of the state’s policy.
