The Bayelsa State Government, through the Ministry of Education, has announced a one-week extension to the 2024 flood break resumption date.
Originally set for Monday, November 18, schools in the state will now resume on Monday, November 25, 2024.
The delay is aimed at allowing floodwaters, which have inundated many school premises across the state, to recede.
Mr. Simon-Peter Okene, the Permanent Secretary of the state’s Ministry of Education, issued a circular on Friday confirming the shift.
He explained the decision, stating:“The extension time is as a result of the current flood situation observed in a reasonable number of school premises across the state.”
The new resumption date applies to both public and private secondary and primary schools in Bayelsa.
Okene further urged operators of private schools to adhere strictly to the officially approved school calendar and ensure that all safety regulations are followed.
He added:“Stakeholders in the educational sector should remain vigilant and ensure that all school safety regulations including cutting of grasses and fumigation of school premises and buildings are carried out before resumption.”
The Bayelsa State Government also expressed its empathy for those affected by the floods, with Okene offering condolences to residents across the state:
“Government wishes to empathize with all Bayelsans who have been affected in one way or the other by flood.”
