Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called on Nigerians living abroad to maintain their strength and optimism as they envision a brighter future for Nigeria.

Speaking during a virtual interactive session with members of the diaspora on Saturday, Abubakar addressed the pressing socio-economic challenges facing the country.

In a statement issued on Sunday from Lagos by Prof. Gold Emmanuel, Senior Special Assistant on Communications, Intelligence, and Diaspora Affairs in the Office of Atiku Abubakar, the former vice president emphasized the importance of not giving up on Nigeria despite the ongoing hardships.

He acknowledged the severe impact of the economic situation, which has exacerbated poverty and led to significant suffering for many Nigerians.

“I urge you not to give up just yet. Your strength and resilience are crucial to Nigeria’s future,” Abubakar stated.

He highlighted the significant role that Nigerians in the diaspora play in shaping the nation’s trajectory, noting their unique perspective on governance and economic management.

“As Nigerians living abroad, you have a unique perspective on what good governance and economic management look like,” Abubakar said.

“I encourage you to continue to pray for Nigeria’s deliverance. Your prayers and support can help bring about the transformation we need. I believe in the potential of our great nation and I know that with collective effort, we can overcome the current challenges and build a prosperous Nigeria for all.”

Abubakar also urged diaspora Nigerians to keep supporting their families and friends back home. “Continue to engage with your loved ones, offering support and encouraging peace and unity in these difficult times. Your contributions to the Nigerian economy through remittances and investments are quite crucial,” he added.

In addition, Abubakar called on the Federal Government to release detained protesters charged with treason, asserting that the right to protest against government policies is constitutionally protected. “I will advise the government to release these young Nigerians without trial immediately,” he said.

He further appealed to Nigerians in the diaspora to use civilized strategies to address government missteps and to continue promoting Nigeria’s potential on the global stage.

“I will appeal to all Nigerians in the diaspora to continue to support Nigeria and project it to the world as the country with great potential,” Abubakar concluded.
