The President of Asiwaju Dapo Wahab Foundation, Alhaji (Asiwaju) Dapo Wahab, has advised parents to prevent drug abuse in young people.
Asiwaju Dapo Wahab gave this charge on Sunday at the 25th anniversary of Muslims Speak Newspaper and presentation of awards held in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
Asiwaju Wahab who was also honoured with a special merit award in recognition of his meritorious service and positive contribution to Islam, called on parents to speak to their children about the consequences of intake of illicit drugs.
Asiwaju Wahab who described drug abuse as a social menace in the society cited that it’s ruining many lives, especially the health of the users, families, communities and nations across the world.
He attributed most of the social vices in the society such as kidnapping, cultism, robbery, rape, cyber crime and domestic violence to the abuse of drugs such as marijuana, cocaine, heroine, among others.
He said many factors were recognized as major predictors of drug abuse in this generation, including poor parenting, exposure to technology, and the environment.
“As a drug abuse advocate, I’ll like to talk to our parents about the effect drug abuse is having on the younger ones “.
“This can however be attributed to poor parenting, peer group influence, exposure to technology, and the environment “.
“Parents need to be more responsive to the need and development of their children”, he added.
Asiwaju Dapo Wahab however thanked the Founder and Publisher of Muslims Speak Newspaper, Ambassador Engr. Ahmed Sambo for the award and recognition.
