The Nigerian Army has confirmed the involvement of Major General G.S. Mohammed and his aide, Corporal A. Abubakar, in an incident captured on video where they were seen assaulting a couple, Mr. Vershima Mker and Ms. Lami Jennifer Iorvihi, in Abuja.

The altercation reportedly occurred after a road-related dispute in the Federal Capital Territory. According to reports, Mr. Mker overtook Major General Mohammed’s vehicle, prompting the senior officer and his aide to stop the couple.

In the video, obtained by SaharaReporters, the Major General and his aide were seen physically assaulting the couple. Ms. Iorvihi, who attempted to record the confrontation, was also attacked. The couple stated that they were handcuffed, forced into the trunk of a vehicle, and transported to Gwarimpa Police Station.

“After the assault, the General instructed the police to detain us indefinitely until he decided we should be released,” Mr. Mker alleged.

Reacting to the incident, the Nigerian Army spokesperson, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, confirmed that the Chief of Army Staff had ordered an investigation into the matter.

“The Chief of Army Staff has directed an investigation into the viral video,” Nwachukwu said. “However, we are yet to ascertain the veracity of the video since we were not privy to what led to the altercation.”

He continued: “You can have a video showing an exchange, but it’s important to know what transpired beforehand. Once the army hears from the Major General involved, we will be able to determine what actually happened. For now, the Chief of Army Staff has mandated that the matter be thoroughly investigated to ascertain the facts.”

The Army’s statement has sparked public interest, with many calling for accountability and transparency in handling the case. The incident has also raised questions about the conduct of high-ranking officers and the abuse of power.
