Rivers LG Elections: APP Clinches 22 Out of 23 Chairmanship Seats in Rivers
In the recently concluded local government elections in Rivers State, the Action People’s Party (APP), reportedly backed by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, secured a decisive victory, clinching 22 out of the 23 available chairmanship seats.
The Chief Election Officer of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Justice Adolphus Enebeli, announced the results on Saturday evening in Port Harcourt.
The formal announcement of the results for the Etche local government area, however, was postponed due to ongoing collation. Justice Enebeli assured that “the results for Etche, along with the 319 councillorship seats, will be declared at a later date once the collation is completed.”
This landslide win for APP is seen as a significant move in Rivers State’s political landscape. The party was reportedly supported by Governor Fubara amid a deepening rift within the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The infighting stems from a power struggle between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, over control of the party in the state.
Political analysts have noted that the backing from Governor Fubara was instrumental in APP’s sweeping success, as the party has now solidified its control over 22 local government areas. With tensions still brewing within the PDP, the outcome of the Etche LGA election will be closely watched to see how it may further impact the political dynamics in Rivers State.
Further details on the councillorship results and the final tally for Etche LGA are expected to be announced soon.
