The Ogun State governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party during the 2023 election, Oladipupo Adebutu, has joined other eminent Nigerians to mourn the exit of the Iyalode of Yorubaland, Chief Alaba Lawson, who died early Saturday morning, aged 72.

Adebutu in a statement by his media aide, Afolabi Orekoya, said the life and time of the late educationist and business magnate could be summed up as “a testament to the power of determination, education, service to community and humanity”.

He said Lawson’s contributions as an entrepreneur, educationist, and leader at various levels of the Chambers of Commerce have left an indelible mark in the sands of history.

Adebutu added that Lawson’s journey from her early education at St. James’s African Primary School in Abeokuta to becoming the first African student to achieve a 1st Class Diploma in Education with distinction at St. Nicholas Montessori Teachers’ Training College in England remains an inspiration to all.

He said “As we reflect on her legacy, we remember her as the Past President of NACCIMA, the first female National President of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture, and the first female President of the Federation of West African Chambers of Commerce and Industry. Her dedication to the growth of commerce and industry in Nigeria and West Africa will forever be appreciated.

“Iyalode Lawson’s commitment to education was evident through her establishment of the Lawson Group of Schools, providing quality education to numerous students. Her leadership extended to the Board of Governing Council of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Ogun State, and various human endeavours.

“Furthermore, her philanthropic efforts, including providing scholarships to less privileged pupils and students, supporting traders in uplifting their businesses, and advocating against the mistreatment of women, are a testament to her compassion and dedication to improving the lives of others.

“The late Iyalode of Yorubaland was not only a symbol of excellence in leadership but also a champion for the empowerment of women. Her numerous roles, such as being the Matron of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ogun State Council, and the National Association of Women Journalists, South-West Nigeria, showcased her unwavering support for women in various fields.

He added, “On behalf of Oladipupo Adebutu, Ogun PDP Gubernatorial candidate in the just concluded 2023 election, and the entire Ogun State PDP family, we extend our deepest condolences to the family of Iyalode Alaba Lawson, her friends, associates, and all those whose lives she touched in all ramifications. We share in your grief during this difficult time.

“While we mourn the loss of an illustrious woman, we also celebrate the legacy of Iyalode Alaba Lawson and the remarkable impact she had on our Society at large. Her memory will forever be cherished.

“While we await further information from the family regarding burial arrangements and express our support during this period of mourning, it is our prayer that the soul of Iyalode Alaba Lawson rest in perfect peace”.
