In a swift response to the recent cholera outbreak that has claimed over 12 lives and left 304 others hospitalized, the Adamawa State government has initiated a comprehensive fumigation exercise across Yola and Jimeta towns.
The exercise aims to curb the spread of the disease and prevent further casualties.
Commissioner for Education, Dr. Umar Garba-Pella, speaking on behalf of Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, directed fumigation teams to carry out house-to-house disinfection in more than 20 wards across the two towns.
He also announced that the fumigation would be extended to all 21 Local Government Areas (LGAs) within the state.
“The government has dedicated the September monthly sanitation exercise to curb the cholera outbreak,” Dr. Pella stated.
He further explained that the fumigation process would target disease-spreading insects such as mosquitoes and their larvae, with the goal of creating a healthier environment for residents.
Dr. Pella stressed the importance of a collective effort in combating the outbreak, noting, “This exercise is part of the government’s commitment to public health and environmental hygiene, and we urge all residents to cooperate fully.”
The large-scale disinfection effort has garnered widespread approval, with strong compliance in areas such as Shagari, Wuru-Hausa, and Upper Luggere.
Residents have expressed gratitude for the government’s proactive measures, recognizing the importance of the initiative in preventing further spread of the disease.
Mr. Shehu Aliyu, Chairman of the Shagari Community Association, lauded the government’s efforts, calling the fumigation timely and critical.
“The intervention has come at the right time. It shows the government’s commitment to protecting its citizens and promoting public health,” Aliyu said.
As the fumigation continues, authorities are optimistic that the aggressive campaign will halt the cholera outbreak, while also reducing other public health risks associated with unsanitary conditions and vector-borne diseases.
The state government has encouraged citizens to adhere to health guidelines, maintain cleanliness, and report any suspected cholera cases promptly.
With this large-scale intervention, the Adamawa State government remains committed to tackling the cholera outbreak and ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens across the 21 LGAs.
